VASUMITRA, THE SEVENTH PATRIARCH,
came from a kingdom in northern India. His surname
was Paradha, and every day he used to put on clean
clothes and walk to the gate of the walled village
carrying a wine-pitcher. Sometimes he sang,
sometimes he whistled, and the people thought him
mad. Upon meeting Master Michaka, who described
his prediction by the Tathagata, he recollected his
relationship with a former Buddha, threw away the
wine-pitcher, renounced the world, and received the
transmission of the dharma...
