This is a view of the actual stone "ta" of Mazu., looking
    inside the open front door of the outer structure. The
    middle line of Chinese characters read, starting at the
    top and descending:
    Mazu Daoyi Daji Chanshi Sheli Zhi Ta

    Ancestor Ma, Way of Oneness, Great Silence Zen
    Master, Abandon Profit Stupa .

    Mazu = Ancestor Ma (Ma is his surname).
    Daoyi=his Buddhist name, Way of Oneness
    Daji Chanshi=posthumous name, Zen master Great
    Silence (usually conferred by the Emporer).
    Sheli=Abandon profit, the name of the stupa itself--these
    memorials were traditionally given names too.
    Zhi ta= the stupa(or pagoda) of--.
