A sign in English identifying one of the temple buildings at Baima Temple in Henan Province--Hall of Mahavira. First built in the Yuan Dynasty, it says. Mahavira was the Jain teerthankara in India, who lived at the same time as Gautam Buddha. Up until modern times, these two men were thought to be the same person by many, especially outside of India. I wonder if this is the case here, the Yuan Dynasty being the foreign reign of the Mongols under Kublai Khan (c. 1200- 1300). |
