The Zen Teaching
of Huang Po

by Huang Po, translated to English
with commentary by John Blofeld
"Huang Po" is a famous Chinese Zen master of the
Tang Dynasty era.  His full name in modern pinyin is
Huangbo Xiyun (720-814).  His master was Baizhang
(J. Hyakujo), and his disciple was
Linji (J. Rinzai).
Huangbo
means "Cork tree".
The stories were originally written in Chinese in the
9th century, and translated to English by J. Blofeld, a
British expat living in Asia, c.1958.

Original Chinese title:

Huangbo Duanji Chanshi Chuan Xin Fa Yao
黃檗斷際禪師傳心法要
Huang Po writes in fragments. On the surface they
seem to be unconnected, but they are not. Your
have to meditate and then you can find the
connection. It is one of the most meditative books
ever written.
