characters carved and painted red.

The left 4 characters read starting
from top right:  
Tian Xia Qing Gui

This means:
The Pure Rules Under Heaven
and is a reference to Baizhang's
well-known monastery rules that he
was said to be the first to lay down for
a Zen monastery.  The text of this is
lost I believe, and has never seen the
light of day, or been translated out of
Chinese.
