These two Chinese characters are pronounced Xizang (Shee-dzahng) in China. Most people of the rest of the world refer to this area as Tibet--another political hot-potato like Taiwan. Xizang means "Western Zang" (Zang is the name of the main ethnic group that lives here.) Zang is also a name for "storehouse", especially of Buddhist scriptures, of which Tibet is well-known for. |
