lived alone, naked, with only a begging bowl and a
dog.
declared himself to be a "citizen of the cosmos".
lived in an earthen tub, sometimes walked with a lamp
in the daytime, "looking for one honest man".
sold as a slave in Crete, telling the buyer that he
would accept only under the condition that D. would
be the "master".
met Alexander the Great, telling him "not to block my
sunlight".
not to be confused with another Greek Diogenes,
Diogenes Laertius, who lived about 500 years later,
and was a biographer of Greek philosophers.
Alexander was coming toward India. He met Diogenes on the way. Diogenes was a rare being – if Diogenes had met Lao Tzu, they both would have sat and laughed and laughed and laughed. They are of the same quality...
