I Ching
anonymous Chinese
Written in modern Chinese pinyin as
Yi Jing (pr. "ee jing"), this is usually translatated
into English as The Book of Changes.
Dates in history are shrouded in mystery, some
saying the Yi Jing originated around 2,800 BCE,
orally, being written down many times later in
various forms throughout Chinese history. A date
of around 1000 BCE might be more accurate as
to the first rudimentary writings of this famous
"book".
The most striking and identifying feature of this
ancient book is the use of 64 "hexagrams", or 6
stacked lines, either solid or broken, with added
commentary.
Translated into English in the 20th century--the
Richard Wilhelm edition being the most well
known.
