William James, a psychologist from the West, used to
say that people don’t run out of panic, they become
panicky because of their running. They don’t run because
of fear, they become afraid because they run. There is
some truth in what James is saying. The more you run,
the more panicky you will become: your running gives
energy to your nervousness, to your fear. And the more
you escape from the rope, the more certain you will
become of the existence of the snake. Now there will be
no way to know that the snake was just a rope. The only
way to know it is to go near to the rope. If you had brought
a light and gone near to the rope you would have found
that there was no snake...
