A young Gongfu monk at Bodhidharma's Kongxiang Zen Temple. Bear Ear Mountain looms in the rear. Shaolin Temple, about 100 miles away in the same province, is the place where the 1st Ancestor of Chinese Chan (zen) spent 9 years "facing the wall" in meditation. Shaolin Temple is a highly built-up tourist site, with thousands of young martial art trainees and teachers living and practicing the various Chinese wushu systems. Shaolin and Kongxiang are sister temples, connected by the thread of Bodhidharma--this young boy is probably from Shaolin, on visit to Bodhidharma's final resting place. |
