This is modern stele that tells a lot about the present state of affairs between China and Japan, as it relates to the common cultural thread of Zen. The date on this is 2002, and it is a memorial tablet in Chinese character text. It seems this has been donated by some Japanese Zen society, who sent a contingent of people over for the unveiling ceremony. As Bodhidharma is the "originator" of Zen, both for the Chinese and Japanese, it is a way for the two countries to collaborate in a public venue. The Japanese fund it, and the Chinese accept it. Reparations from what the Chinese call "The War of Resistance Against the Japanese"(WWII) is seen on many levels, this just being one instance. |
