father was Piero, a wealthy notary
mother was a peasant maid, Caterina, some say a middle
eastern slave.

father Piero had one of his laborers, also named Piero,
become the husband of Caterina,
thereby becoming
Leonardo's step-father for the first years of
the young boy's  
life.  Then the notary Piero took the child back to his house
with his legal wife and raised Leonardo away from his mother
and step-father.

the quality it should have. Now, Leonardo da Vinci is one of
the greatest geniuses, and whatever he has done is
