Marpa was a Tibetan mystic, Buddhist Tantra
master, etc.  His disciple was
Milarepa.  He had a
wife and sons, who lived with him in southern Tibet,
and he was unusual in that he never became a
wandering ascetic or part of a monastery, like many
other Tibetan tantra men of that era--he remained a
householder, husband, father, and businessman.

Like many of his contemporaries of this period and
location in Tibet and Nepal, his writings are really
songs and oral verses, written down later by
followers.
