    Note:

The title of this book comes from a Chinese
Zen story that Osho relates many times in
the course of these talks -- The Goose is
Out. This anectode is included in the Zen
collection Congrong Lu (The Book of
Serenity, case 91), and is a story of the well
known Chinese Zen master Nanquan Puyuan
    (J. Nansen) and a visiting government
official, Lu Gen(Lu Xuan)  – an English
translation of this story is reproduced below
    here:

Lu Gen of the Tang dynasty was
styled Jingshan: he was a man of Wu
prefecture. In his official career he
reached the post of inspector of
Shexuan, and also was a member of
    the supreme court.

He first asked Nanquan, "I've raised a
goose in a bottle, and it gradually grew
too big to get out; now, without
damaging the bottle or injuring the
goose, how would you get it out?"

    Nanquan called to him, "Sir!"

    Lu Gen responded, "Yes?"

    Nanquan said, "It's out."

Lu Gen was awakened at this.

Lao Tzu became enlightened through seeing
a dead leaf falling from a tree.

He was sitting under a tree meditating for
years, and nothing was happening and he
had been to great Masters. Something was
missing. He was trying too hard to grasp the
truth; that very effort was the barrier. That
early spring morning, the birds singing, the
trees swaying, the sun shining, the fragrance
of the flowers... he forgot all about
    enlightenment.

Once in a while it is very good to forget all
about enlightenment, otherwise it can drive
you nuts more than anything else! Money
will not drive you so crazy, nor will politics,
because they are all graspable. If you try hard
you can get as much money as you want; just
a little effort, a little cunningness, a little
    calculativeness something Jewish in your
blood -- and you can manage. Something of
the insane in you and you can become a
    politician...
