On the one hand you go on producing people more and more
and more, and there are not enough things for them, neither
food nor clothes nor shelter. Then what do you want? You are
putting people in a situation where they are bound to become
    criminals.

The world population has to be cut to one third  – if you want
    crime to disappear...

                World Population
The total world population as of 4pm, February 19, 2008 is estimated to be:

6,651,654,191--that is, over 6 and a half billion people.

As shown in the chart below, the number of human beings on Earth increase about 212,000 every day
-- 77 million every year.

Just 38 years ago, in 1970, the world population was 3.9 billion, about half of what it is today.

China and India combined account for over 2 billion people, or 1 out of every 3
humans on Earth.  In 1960,
Osho started speaking on the need for birth control in
India, which at that time had a population of about 400 million people. His views,
opposed by the traditional religious mind of the country, went unheaded, and now
India has more than doubled its numbers to over 1 billion.
China, on the other hand,
which has always been the most populous nation on Earth, in 1980 instituted the
"one-child policy" for its citizens--with firm enforcement.  As a consequence, China's
population, while still the largest on the planet (1.3 billion), has about 300-400 million
less people now than it would have had otherwise without the birth control policy.

The present type of procreation is fine for cats,
dogs and worms, but not for human beings. Is this
the way? – this thoughtless production of children,
this accidental, meaningless, aimless procreation?
To go on creating rows of children – a crowd? And
how vast our crowd has become! Our population
has exploded to such incredible proportions that if it
is not checked in time, scientists say there will not
even be room to move your elbows in a hundred
years! A hundred years from now you will feel you
are in the middle of some public meeting all the
time. Wherever you move you will find yourself in a
public gathering. To call a public gathering
separately will be unnecessary and also not
possible...

Things are in such a state that they can only be
done compulsorily.
Birth control is the only way to
prevent this population from growing, and if you
wait for the masses to understand and if you wait
for them to be educated, then it is not going to
happen, ever...

Just fifty years ago in India, out of ten children nine
were going to die within two years, only one was
going to survive. Now just the opposite is the case:
nine are going to survive, only one is going to die.
How has it happened within fifty years’ time?
Modern medicine has done the miracle; it has
changed the whole balance. If you accept medicine
and if you accept the hospitals and if you accept
that people have to be saved from cancer and
tuberculosis, then you have to use birth control.
Otherwise how can the population be kept within
normal, bearable limits..?

China now has the greatest population in the world,
but by the end of this century
India will have the
greatest population, because China is not a
democracy and they are using every possible way
to prevent the growth of population. And they are
succeeding.

By the end of this century India will be the greatest
populated country in the world and, of course, it will
have the greatest problems – almost impossible to
solve. They can be solved right now, but to solve
them means you have to fight with the people for
their own sake. They will be against you. They are
against me for the simple reason because
whatsoever I say can be of help, but it goes against
their traditions, against their conventions, against
their orthodox mind...

From where does the violence begin? If anybody is
responsible then it is
Mother Teresa, the pope,
their
God. Why does he go on and on producing
eggs and living sperms? It is time to stop. Already
the world is four times more populated than it
should be. If the world population can be reduced to
one-fourth there will be no poverty, no violence;
thousands of problems will disappear...
