Resurrection was Tolstoy's last work, first
published in 1899. original in Russian.
All the money made from this book was
donated by Tolstoy and his translators to the
Doukhobors, a Christian sect of Caucasian
Russians that were persecuted by the Russian
government--they were pacifists who refused
military service, had the habit of going about
without clothes, and other non-conformist
attitudes. Hundreds were exiled to Siberia, and
thousands ended up emigrating to Canada,
where they still exist in the present times in
Doukhobor communities.
This handwritten note was printed in a 1899 English
translation of Tolstoy's book, Resurrection. It reads:
