Rinzai is the Japanese pronunciation of the
Chinese Chan master
Linji (pr. "leen jee"), a very
well-known Zen master of theTang Dynasty era.

There is an original book in Chinese called the
Linji
Lu (Record of Linji)
, which has been translated into
English, and is available in the Numata Series of
English translations of the Buddhist
Tripitaka. This
is a massive ongoing project of a wealthy Japanese
industrialist (now dead), who has funded a
translation organization dedicated to translating the
entire Buddhist canon (the
Tripitaka), including the
available Zen texts from Japanese and Chinese into
English. He estimated that it will take maybe 100
years to complete the project.
