The Songs of Meera

by Meera
aka:  Songs of Mirabai
1498-1547
These are the written songs of a north Indian princess
Meera, who supposedly left her high-society Rajput
family life, and spent her days on the streets as a poor
wandering minstrel, singing and dancing mystical
devotions to Lord Krishna.
Meera's Songs--they are the most beautiful ever sung
by any man or any woman. It is impossible to translate
them.

original Hindi--devanagari script:
I sailed in a swing into sleep,
saw Him
--and all unsung,
me asleep!

I rushed
to appease,
to greet...

fell into a deep waking, and lost him.

Those other than me,
says Meera, are blessed.

Their dreams with lovers
begin when they wake.

Daylight for Meera means
waiting til He
enters her dwelling and makes all
things well.
